Maclaren stroller recall – my review

Maclaren LogoNot often do you hear about people doing reviews of recalls, but I can’t help myself.

One of Maclaren’s umbrella strollers has been voluntarily recalled by the company.  Per Maclaren’s website, “It is also important to note that there are no federal or state mandated standards in the United States in respect of strollers.”  So, thank you Maclaren for trying to do the right thing here, stepping up, and trying to stay one step ahead of the public.  Unfortunately, you’re still going to get bashed by the headlines, “Maclaren recalls dangerous stroller”.

Anyway… the report from the CPSC states, “The stroller’s hinge mechanism poses a fingertip amputation and laceration hazard to the child when the consumer is unfolding/opening the stroller.”

#1 – Uhhh…

#2 – I give props to any parent who can unfold and open a stroller with their child in it. Maybe they’ve figured out something I don’t know.  After all, it would save one the hassle of having to take the child in and out of the stroller every time you want to use it – especially with twins!  Changing diapers could be a bit problematic, however.

Maclaren is punching back a bit on their website by stating, “It should be noted that the hazards posed by hinge mechanisms were inherent not just to Maclaren products, but to nearly all umbrella-fold models.”  Thank God I haven’t tried folding and unfolding our non-Maclaren brand umbrella stroller with the twins still in it.  Whew!!  If I had, and the kids had gotten hurt, and stroller safety isn’t regulated by anyone, I’d have to find a high-priced lawyer to take on my case so I could sue the company for my stupidity.

Disclaimer: I understand that they are probably referring to the kids being near the stroller when these  accidents occurred, and that people weren’t folding and unfolding the stroller with their kid in it, but then again…
